Final Challenge: “A Distant Place and Time”

Combatants, Spectators, and anyone listening to this message by the accident of discovery, we would like to welcome you all to a celebration of History.

In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down in Germany; in 239 B.C. the leap year was first introduced into the Egyptian calendar; in 2144, the only human colony on Mars was proud to earn ‘first world’ status (at least, in one possible future, it was).

A complex challenge has been brewing in the hearts and minds of WYRMs for some time now, and we believe you three are sharpened and skilled enough to take it on. While we pride ourselves on knowing our history, we don’t know everything about it. The more we learn, the less we know. We look into old texts with bewilderment, and into the stars with a frustrating kind of wonder. In fact, one of the only places we haven’t looked for answers is to you, the final 3. Until now.

Your Final Challenge is to write a speculative fiction story set in the location we provide to you. The date, time, and events are your prerogative. It can be past or future, but there must be no stories set in present day.

Quickly, here are some things we don’t restrict: story length, graphic content, the species of characters, the element of speculative fiction you wish to use. Although, we think this is pretty much a given for Gauntlet writing rounds, so, onto the hard stuff.

    * You will be given a location, not a time period. However, we are just not interested in stories set in present day. About 25 years in either direction is the closest date we’re likely to enjoy, but the further you go, and more different from the modern age you get, the better. On the other hand, there is no limit as to how far away you may go into either the past or future.

    * Below, you have each been assigned a location. But, that doesn’t mean you have to like it. In fact, you may trade with a fellow Gauntleteer if you wish, and if they wish. The only catch is that you must do this within the first 48 hours. That, and we’d like any trade talks to take place in this forum. The exact deadline for trades is: Friday, Oct 6th @10PM EST. Otherwise, you stick with the location you were given. But by all means, trade. If you can.

    * We want the geography of your assigned region to be well-researched, and for that research to find its way into the story. Obviously, if you choose to set your story amid a major historical event, that should be well-researched, too.

    * Finally, due to complications with Word Press plugins, and our normal submissions system, we ask that you submit your stories old school via email or email attachment here: [email protected]

This is a two-week challenge, and the Final Challenge. You already know that now is the time to let it all hang out.

    Deadline: Wednesday, October 18th @ 10PM EST

    All the best,
    WYRM

Heads up, fellow competitors. I’m keeping my moon. M-O-O-N, that spells Sammi’s Sulci.

And just like that, the trade deadline is up. There’s something I admire about you all sticking with the given locations. There’s a ‘challenge accepted’ spirit in it…

    No fighting? No fighting at all? {{leans back with a mournful sigh and cracks open another beer}}

In all seriousness, very eager to read these three stories!

I meannnnn, we didn’t fight over the prompts, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t fight at all. Travis and I might have had a slap fight when no one was looking…

*falls over laughing at the gif fest*

I would just like to state that–of all the things on the internet that can be locked behind a paywall–research data on ocean depths/abysses/etc, SHOULD NOT be one of them. Ugh. Charge for porn, not education! 😀

Ummm. Yeah. I won’t be providing a GIF fest for where this thread is heading. 🙂
